So, this is Christmas!

Well, then. Christmas has finally arrived, and boy are we excited.

Here's what it looks like when a little boy, who is discovering the real joys of Christmas just this year, and a little girl, who is only interested in eating the ornaments, see the presents for the first time. Memorable quotes from the day include:

"Boy, there aren't a lot of presents!"

"I wanted the barn, but..." (said in a tone of voice which indicated he wasn't aware he'd spoken aloud, in reference to the Word World Dog's House we bought him, instead of the barn which it turns out is what he really wanted).

Watch this space for a small slide show, coming soon. UPDATE: and here it is.

Who needs Syrup of Ipecac?

...when you can give your son some of a "Word World" cookie with colored gel on it and watch him vomit green stuff? He only ate the I and the E.

The second-littlest elf.

Aizay is getting excited for Christmas. He begged us for a week (or so) to put up the tree, and we finally got around to it. It's a new tree, by the way...pre-lit and everything.

Cleanliness is next to impossible...

...without getting water everywhere. Coraline has come to love baths so much that the sound of running water brings her running.

Finally, a non-blurry photo

We finally got her to stand still for a picture.

Let's build a word!

Aizay is Dog from PBS's Word World, and Coraline is a penguin. It was 70 degrees last night, so they also made me feel sweaty just looking at them.

Good morning!

Coraline hasn't been still since she learned how to walk

This is why Aizay has been dominating the blog. We can't get Coraline to stay still.

Cruel parents

Now that Aizay's a big boy, he needs to eat more than just peanut butter sandwiches. That little chunk of food--breaded and fried corn--is the item he's been tasked to try today, though judging by his reaction we are making him eat hunks of tire rubber in a motor-oil sauce.

Courtney is Coraline's friend.

Today I was rushed when picking up Coraline and Aizay at Little Angels. I grabbed Aizay, ran over to the infant room, elbowed my way past the moms, got the diaper bag, picked up my girl and left.

As I got to the car, I put down the diaper bag...and finally noticed that somewhere in there I'd been given a pink bag with Coraline's name on it and some gifts.

In the bag was a card from Courtney, Coraline's favorite teacher. Suffice to say that it just about made us cry. Me especially because I'd been so rushed and never said thanks or even noticed! What a tool. My only hope is that she reads this over the weekend. Thank you, Courtney. You rock.

I let her out of my sight for one minute...

Rebel without a real bike.

Sometimes we live through our children. I've always wanted a motorcycle, and for a brief, glorious moment I actually owned one, until I came to my senses. I still want one, though. Here's Aizay, livin' the dream. Go, l'il rebel...go!

This is fun? Part 2

This is fun?

I can't tell if Aizay's having fun or not.

Speak up!

Aizay hasn't got much to say...put words in his mouth in the comments. Best comment wins his undying respect and admiration.

Happy birthday Aizay! Part 1

Aizay and friends make a delicious broth of fresh-cut grass and sand, and just a touch of birthday brownie-cake.

Happy Birthday Aizay! Part 2

Aizay contemplates a world where children are happy cargo and trains smile, trying not to cause confusion and delay.

Happy birthday Aizay! Part 3

I shot this with a very long lens so I'd stay safe from the frenzied pack of wild children as they attacked their prey.

Aizay's proposal for a new travel poster for Boston.

Miss Adventure

Coraline is 9 and a half months old. She is 19-ish pounds and is at about the 65th %-ile in weight. She has slept 9 to 10 hours through the night the last 4 nights. The biggest development, however, is that she can walk! She also recently climbed out of her baby restraint exersaucer.

I think she will probably be riding a bike before Aizay since he is afraid of pedaling. Coraline, afraid? not-so-much

The library's fancy family restroom

This restroom is larger than my bedroom. I just had to strap Coraline to the wall so I could enjoy it. Also, around the corner is a nice nursing room with comfy mats in which I have inadvertently fallen asleep.

Aizay learns of his mortality

Aizay: Daddy, when will you be three?
Me: Never. I was three when I was a boy like you, but I'll never be three again.
Aizay: (silence)
Me: And after you are four, you'll never be three again either.
Aizay: (inconsolable sobs) Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!

Davis Farmland smells like fun pt. 4

Coraline is modeling her sunglasses, after her foray into the water.

Davis Farmland smells like fun, pt. 3

Aizay didn't want to take part in the splashpark fun for some reason. He decided it was more fun to put instead...until 5 minutes before they shut off the water, at which point he decided it looked fun after all. Timing, my boy, is everything.

Babies love water that shoots out of the ground suddenly.

We bought Aizay this pony, but had to return him when we couldn't find where the batteries should be installed.

Love and Rackets

I really hope that they are always this loving, because I don't want to have to referee the "He's looking at me!" fights.

Gnaw't bad.

If you look closely, you can see Coraline's two new companions, Little Miss Achey and The Dame of Dentition.

We got punked.

On Friday, a rumor flashed around the Iowa City area that they were closing the Burlington Street bridge, which would have cut off west Iowa City from east Iowa City. Everyone at the UI promptly packed up and left their offices. Traffic was a mess for hours, but we must have been among the first to get out.

We later went to daycare before the emergency parent-teacher meeting, and shot this video of Coraline practicing her standing in the basement of the church.

It's now Saturday night, by the way, and the Burlington Street bridge is still open, but expected to close today.

Here's a positive flood update...the utilities/services in town most likely won't be affected. About the picture above: I filled my tank here Friday. I have a few coupons for 5 & 10 cents off per gallon. And I have one coupon for 15 cents off. So this is one little way the flood affects me.

I took this picture from the parking lot of the "Waterfront HyVee" grocery store parking lot. Since you can't see the river from the store (it's 1/2 mile away), the name perplexed me. Now, I guess it makes sense.

Cute and dry.

Flood or no flood, Coraline is a happy girl. Not to brag, but we're constantly told by teachers and other parents at her daycare how cute and fun she is. Hey, I'm just reporting the facts, here.
