Come to Iowa for the great surfing!

So, we try to keep this blog specifically for news about the kids, but we're going to take a quick break from all that to say, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHG!"

Iowa City is, as you've heard, flooding. We've been told just now to not go to work for the next week. Well...alrighty then. This is an amazing experience. Iowa City is split down the middle by the Iowa River. The east side contains the downtown area and half of the UI campus and our house. The west side contains some of the dorms plus the athletics and healthcare campuses and our offices. Apparently by the end of the weekend (we're guessing by tomorrow) there will be no way to cross from one to the other. The river won't crest until Tuesday at the earliest, at 33 feet (22 feet is flood stage).

We don't live near the river (we're a couple miles away on higher ground). But we don't know how hard it's going to be to get to get around town, or whether daycare will close (there's an emergency parent-teacher meeting tonight). The news is saying that this is a 500-year flood. I sincerely hope that our children don't have to endure our company 24 hours a day for the next week. On the other hand, maybe we'll get a lot done around the house. We've laid in a supply of water, plugged up the drain in the basement, and are planning to stop taking baths to conserve water. If it's yellow, we're letting it mellow. Will grocery stores run out of food because trucks can't get here? Good thing I haven't cut the grass in two weeks--we'll have something to munch on.

If you're trying to get in touch with Christine, she left her phone charger at work and won't be able to retrieve it for a week. So call Dave instead.
